Hygiene Hub

In August 2020 we embarked on our first public art project to design a hygiene station in SE Portland built and operated by and for people experiencing houselessness.

GMS artists Aileen and Michael worked together to create murals combining Aileen’s colorful nature-inspired drawings and patterns representing Michael’s native heritage.

A place to rest and refresh

The hygiene hub featured an eighty foot long mural privacy wrap, as well as bright painting and bamboo plants contributed by GMS gardeners.

The project immediately led to further opportunities for our artists: Michael was approached for a commission by an apparel company who saw his drawings on display, and Dana and Aileen later received awards from The Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts!
